At the end, they both discover that the kidnapping was a trap prepared for them by the Japanese detective Akechi Holmes, and Lupin is arrested. Fujiko instead manages to escape, and to restore her pride, she decides to help Lupin escape, taking advantage of the lack of coordination between Akechi and Zenigata.
