During his training, Subaru struggles to utilize magic. Continuing with his work as a butler, he mentally and physically overexerts himself in his effort to gain the trust of the twin maids and falls asleep lying on Emilia's lap, crying. That night, Subaru wakes up and asks Beatrice about detecting curses, learning that curses must be activated through physical contact, and through that piece of information he joyfully deduces that the curse came from the village. The next day, Subaru returns to work and gets the twins to agree to go with him to the village.
